Plant Health Care

At Kelley Tree Service, our approach to tree health is a Plant Health Care, or PHC, program. According to the International Society of Arboriculture,

“The objective of PHC is to maintain or improve the landscape’s appearance, vitality, and safety using the most effective and environmentally sensitive practices and treatments available. PHC involves routine monitoring, preventive treatment, and a working relationship between the arborist and the property owner.”

Kelley Tree Service proudly offers custom Plant Health Care programs for our customers. Our services are targeted, intentional, and specific to your property’s needs.  Although each individual Plant Healthcare Program is unique, most share these common themes:

Plant Identification
Health Assessment
Adjusting Irrigation
Mulching
Fertilization
Soil management
Identifying and treating insects and diseases
Ongoing monitoring of tree and shrub health

Broad Spectrum Tree Spraying

An Antiquated Practice

Some tree care companies choose to blanket properties with broad spectrum insecticides, pesticides and fungicides. While this technique would certainly take care of any problematic pests, it also kills the beneficial species and decreases biodiversity on the property. Because the ecosystem’s delicate balance is disturbed, those properties became dependent upon regular, repeat treatments for the life of the property because the trees and shrubs are left vulnerable to attack. The International Society of Arboriculture asserts:

“Most insects are beneficial rather than destructive. They help with pollination or act as predators of more harmful species. Killing all insects without regard for their kind and function can actually be detrimental to tree health.”

While some properties may be so problematic that a broad spectrum treatment is required, we recognize the problems with the blanket spraying technique and opt for targeted, custom treatments instead.

Insect and Disease Management

In Massachusetts, there are many insects and diseases affecting our trees. Insects can chew, suck, or bore into your trees, causing stress and stealing nutrients.
